Under threat
By Cathie Bell Picton’s historic foreshore paddling pool is under threat. The paddling pool was installed in 1954, paid for by Maria Card, the daughter of Marlborough’s first newspaper publisher. However, the Marlborough District Council says it has passed its serviceable life and wants to rip it out and replace it with a different water feature, using the money from a bequest and funds from the council’s subdivision sales.

Overall it is a problematic asset to operate and deliver as a key feature within the foreshore reserve.” Council staff are asking councillors at tomorrow’s meeting to approve extra money for a “zero depth water-

play feature” as a replacement for the paddling. “Many people have fond memories of using the paddling pool however with the decline of this popular asset and increasing maintenance costs, its replacement with a modern equivalent is seen as being appropriate.” The cheapest quote for a zero depth water play feature is $248,850 the report says. This does not include ground works estimated to be approximately $50,000 leaving a shortfall of $183,848. The Picton Business Group has indicated support for this project through its submission to the Annual Plan, staff say. “Additionally they have offered to assist council in drafting an application to a relevant funding agency (to help reduce any funding shortfall), and/or by approaching businesses to see if an offer of their services can reduce the cost of the project to council.” However, the Land Subdivision Reserve Account has income which

Dogs in danger of life-threatening disease By Cathie Bell Dogs are continuing to be infected by the life-threatening canine parvovirus, a Marlborough vet warns. Marlborough dog owners are being warned to vaccinate their dogs against the several cases of the highly infectious and often fatal dog disease, Canine Parvovirus, which is present in Blenheim. Vets on Alabama vet Nick Gorman says there had been two cases three weeks ago and another one had come in last
week. Dog owners need to stay vigilant. Nick says the parvovirus is a nasty infectious disease that especially affects young dogs and puppies. The virus is very resistant and can live in the environment for a long time, even months, he says. “Affected animals need very intensive treatment which can cost many hundreds of dollars. “Despite intravenous fluids and such, the disease can still be fatal.” Vaccination provides excel-
lent protection and this severe and often fatal disease can be prevented, Nick says. “If your pup or dog is not up to date with their vaccines, contact your veterinarian now to arrange a vaccination appointment. “Other advice is that unvaccinated dogs and puppies should not be walked in public areas, where they may be exposed to the virus.” The cases that were confirmed at Vets on Alabama were young unvaccinated puppies from different areas of town, he says.

Angela Fredericks, who works as a mussel opener at Kono Seafoods’ Riverlands plant, won the mussel-opening competition while nine months’ pregnant and this year, she’s determined to repeat the win. The Guinness Book of Records recognises her as having the fastest time to open 100 mussels in 1 min 57 sec at last year’s festival. She does mussel-opening at work every day, so she’s not really practicing, she says. But work is a competitive envi-

people in the team event and while some of them are not entering the individual event, most are, Angela says. “There’s one person faster than me at work, but she doesn’t want to enter.” The contest is quite different to work, Angela says. “You open 50 mussels. You’re not doing it the whole day. You just go hard out for a little period of time, it’s not the whole eight hours of the day.” The audience is different too. Angela says she tries not to look at anyone while competing. She has a support team and they cheer really loudly, she says. This year, though, they say they’ll cheer for her partner, who

All the roads closed after last week’s heavy rain have re-opened, but Marlborough Roads is warning drivers to take care. The Rainbow Road was the worstaffected road, and it is now open again. However, Marlborough Roads says there is still water in the fords so drivers should apply caution and drive to the conditions.

Sections selling fast in hot market By Cathie Bell Marlborough’s hot property market is flowing through to the sales of sections. Since December, houses have been selling faster than they have in years, and real estate agents say they have far more buyers than there are houses to sell. This has boosted section sales as well. Colon ia l Vineya rds spokesman Mark Davis says the sections at the first stage of the Omaka Landing subdivision off New Renwick Road are selling well, with 70 per cent of the sections sold. Marlborough’s property market was quite tight, he says. There are a lot of people

looking for houses, and not much stock to buy. “People want choice, so they are looking at building their own houses again.’ It’s good for sections.” Deluxe Properties spokesman Greg Smith says the market for residential sections in Marlborough was better than it had been since 2007. Just a general buoyancy of the economy. People are feeling positive, a lot of confidence out there. When like that, people are happy to spend money and move up a step. We’re on an upward cycle. Mud and fun in equal measure More than 400 people turned out for Havelock’s Sport Tasman Muddy Buddy event, coming from near and far. Organiser Jane Miles was hoping for a record turnout for the event’s third year, and she got it. The adventure fun run drew 136 in its first year in 2013, rose to 359 last year, and hit 435 entries this year. Set in the estuary by Havelock’s marina, participants were set an 800 metre-long course which included two

slides, a cargo net to crawl under and a zigzag section, all designed to get them as muddy as possible. Many took the opportunity to dress up, some trying to get round in full-length dresses. People are encouraged to dress up for the race, with Jane saying she has seen some wonderfully colourful, outrageous and clever costumes over the years. Jane says it was “a cracking good day”,
and thanked the local community groups and businesses who supported the event. The Havelock Lions Club ran a BBQ with all profits going to assist Havelock youth to attend outdoor education programmes, while the Havelock Volunteer Community Fire Brigade helped set up and pack up, as well as providing the much-needed wash down of competitors and their gear afterwards.

‘Old girls’ celebrate Story and photo by Cathie Bell The first meeting for 2016 of the Marlborough Girls’ College Old Girls’ Association started with a celebration for its members. About 30 members gathered in Blenheim on Saturday to celebrate seven of the group turning 90. Nancy Hammond, Gwen Warren, Betty Laird, Doreen Fowler, Rae Gilmore, Ellen Jarvis, and Mary Gibbons gathered around the big cake made for their birthday celebrations. They all turn 90, either since the associa-
tion’s last meeting or later this year, association spokeswoman Daphne Corbett says. The ladies blew out their cake together, and had to move a bit quicker than planned when a flower posey on the cake caught fire. Daphne says it has been two months since the group last met, and they had a lot to catch up on. “We always start the year with a coffee meeting, so we decided to make this one a celebration.” The association raises funds for the girls’ college, she says.
Renwick water to clear By Cathie Bell The dirty water after last week’s heavy rains has meant Renwick township’s water supplies are tight again because of quality issues. The Marlborough District Council says that as a result of the recent significant rainfall, Marlborough river levels have been high and aquifers are slowly recovering with good recharge flows. While Renwick well levels have been steadily recovering since the rainfall and high river flows last week, the subsequent dirty river water quality has created a short term problem, Renwick residents are asked to limit their water use until the river clears. Council water staff say well levels have increased 400 mm since Wednesday last week. But, by Saturday, the dirty water in Gibson’s Creek had started to affect the water quality in the supply wells. Staff had to turn off the pump in well four,
the one closest to the river, and to increase the output from the other wells to limit the dirty water entering the system. “Overall this has reduced the water available to the network from 50 litres per second to 38 litres per second – a reduction of 24 per cent. “This is necessary for a couple of days only, until the river clears.” The council praised Renwick residents for cooperatively and voluntarily reducing water use over summer. “Council asks that they be particularly vigilant while the water supply is at a much reduced capacity until the river clears and water quality in the well field returns to normal. “It is anticipated that, once this dirty water event is over, water availability at Renwick will return to normal and the need for voluntary restrictions will have passed.” All other water supplies have benefited from the rainfall and will meet demand for the rest of the summer.

Dear Ed Anyone seen the Wicked camper vans but especially those with crude writing? One said “Thou Shalt Not Steal. God is watching you, you thieving .....” Another referred to in utterly foul terms, of a relationship between a boss and worker - so foul, it’s impossible to put into words. Apart from offending Kiwis, what a poor, despicable image for tourists to see. Wicked Vans are apparently an Australian company. So why do authorities tolerate it? What is government going to do? What is Marlborough District Council going to do? The latter could quickly pass a by-law (one in North Auckland has done so) to outlaw the foul worded ones in Marlborough. Selling point Dear Ed, From reading articles about new businesses establishing in Marlborough I find myself feeling particularly positive about staying in the region. I admit there have been many times I have researched job opportunities out of Marlborough, throughout Australia and even further afield, but I feel Marlborough is experiencing a fantastic upturn in jobs and business development. More jobs, more commercial buildings being leased and built is a hell of a lot more positive than a few years ago when local newspapers continually highlighted the increase in empty shops in Blenheim CBD. As some may hate to hear this, with this positive new shift comes a shift away from the CBD. I applaud those who are working hard to reinvigorate the town, but what is wrong with change? My opinion would be to completely change the whole culture of the CBD by closing Market Street which is tiresome and frustrating to use at the best of times, and create a shopping area that allows stalls, food carts and live entertainment on a daily basis. Then support other business areas to set up around Blenheim as they would not be competing with this unique selling point. Food for thought

War planes inspire book Gavin Conroy has travelled four times around the world photographing some of the most spectacular World War II aircraft. Not only did he publish a book from his photographs but he also achieved a life long goal - to fly in the De Havilland Mosquito KA114, a British combat aircraft Gavin had admired from a young age. Gavin talks to Celeste Alexander about his experiences and his new book Fighters & Bombers.
As a young boy Gavin had dreamed of seeing the DH Mosquito KA114 up close. Never did he imagine he would fly in one. The Mosquito is believed to be the world’s only airworthy of its kind, the aircraft’s body was re-fabricated from scratch and had its first test flight in New Zealand before returning to its owner in Virginia Beach, America. Gavin had followed the project since 2007 and photographed it in Auckland before it was disassembled and sent to the US. This immediately sparked something inside Gavin he could not ignore. In May 2013 he travelled to Virginia Beach where the aircraft’s owner Jerry Yagen owns a Military Aviation Museum. He watched it fly then returned home. But that nagging question remained - could he return and fly with the planes? In June he travelled to Canada to watch it fly again and two of his
photographs featured on the covers of 10 international magazines. But there was one shot he could not get, and that was front on in the air. “I got into talks and it was finally agreed to put me on a flight with it,” he says. Gavin flew in a B25 bomber and from his position sitting in the rear tail gunner spot he got his prized shots. “I had followed the Mosquito from when it was a wooden structure to it flying. I don’t know if it’s commitment or madness...I still don’t know,” he laughs. Because Gavin had photographs of the Mosquito, a Lancaster bomber, Bill Reid’s Anson bomber and the B25, the idea evolved to publish a book. He already had Precious Metal from his NZ aircraft photography, but this was something bigger and better, he says. To complete the book Gavin had to return to the US where he flew with nine aircraft over three days, one being the German Me 262 jet. “That was an incredible moment
for me. “I had the Me 262 and the Mosquito in the same photo. These aircraft had not met since 1944 when they were first in combat,” he says. Rodeo fun for all ages The Tuamarina Rodeo and Vintage Machinery Field Day is back again for its 67th year and kicks off this Sunday. This event holds the proud tradition of being New Zealand’s longest running rodeo, boasting a real festival feel for all ages to enjoy. What is more, the Tuamarina Rodeo has raised thousands of dollars which has been poured back into the Marlborough community to benefit a range of organisations, including the Tuamarina School. From the organising committee through to the ground support, the event is strongly supported by volunteers and local businesses who contribute a huge amount of man power and sponsorship. “It’s a charitable rodeo with all proceeds going back to the community, and not just Tuamarina. We are willing to help anyone out,” committee member Terry Reed says. One of the major sponsors, Dave Weir of the Junction Hotel says it’s a great event that’s hugely beneficial to the community. “The thousands of dollars the rodeo raises

The Junction Hotel will have a mechanical ‘bucking bull’ on the Friday and Saturday nights leading up to the event from 6:30pm onwards. Additions to the rodeo this year include a speed shear competition held during the lunch break. Entry is on the day, and for spectators there will be a grandstand this year. A courtesy coach has also been organised for people who wish to have a few drinks and need a ride to Blenheim. Also on show will be monster trucks, vintage machinery displays, side shows, a variety of food available, coffee and a bar facility. For anyone brave enough to experience the thrills and spills of rodeo riding, day licenses are

Fifth birthday celebration Blenheim café Watery Mouth is celebrating being open for five years today. The café - known locally as the “slobbery gob” or “dribbles” - is open seven days a week from 7.00am until 4.00pm. Some people have queried the café’s name, but Juliet says the name gives an insight into the philosophy at Watery Mouth. “It’s about creating the perfect environment in which to enjoy the mouth-watering sensation that comes when you look at, smell, and eat delicious food.” The signature dish is a bacon, kumara and avocado stack, a gluten-free option, with the kumara being native to New Zealand, and drizzled with homemade hollandaise sauce, a “must-try”. Five years in the hospitality business is a long time, and owner Juliet Partington says a lot of the café’s thriving business is due to her staff, many who are long serving. Juliet says she and the team meet each month to discuss how things are going and to plan ahead. Each staff member has a chance to have their say on the direction of the business. They have a vision statement “to provide every customer with a welcoming and memorable cafe experience”. “It’s really important to me…That provides our direction.
“And we can’t do it without great support from our lovely customers. I’d like to thank them too.” Manager Victoria Giles, with Caralee Mulholland, provides the main meet and greet on the front counter, and along with barista Matt Wright and Phil Knapp, ensure that people feel welcome as soon as they reach the counter. Caralee says she loves coming into work each day and providing a service to the café’s loyal customers and meeting new people from here and afar. With the café’s location, it’s easy to attract passers-by, and its FaceBook page shows visitors ranging from the Black Sticks women’s hockey team to the Hurricanes Super Rugby team popping in. Watery Mouth chefs Anthony Fagan and Renee Marks, along with Juliet herself, have cooked for famous people – people like entertainer Rhys Darby, actress and model Rachel Hunter, and celebrity cook Annabel Langbein have all been to Watery Mouth. They have also catered for celebrity chef Simon Gault’s private plane. Juliet thanks her past and current staff who have made the cafe the success it is today. She also thanks her suppliers, along with other businesses, that have supported Watery Mouth over the past five years.

Son follows father into racing Sport Story and photo by Celeste Alexander When his father is a mechanic and speedway competitor, it’s of little surprise that Sam Martin has followed in his footsteps. Sam and his father Daryl Martin are regular faces at Eastern States Speedway. Daryl first began racing at Eastern States Speedway in 1982, the year the club’s track was built at Foxes Island and well before he had a family of his own. Now over 30 years later Daryl is sharing the track with Sam, passing on his knowledge and passion for racing. Marlborough Football’s Muster Day - the junior football club registration day - is on Sunday March 6. All new and existing players are asked to sign up and register to any of the clubs: Redwood FC, Rangers AFC, Trojans AFC, Blenheim Valley FC, and Renwick FC upstairs in the pavilion at the A&P Showgrounds between 9am and 12 noon.

Eastern States Speedway played host to the ELF Super Cup Super Saloon Series on Saturday night. The South Island’s top super saloon drivers took to the track to battle it out for points, including
local driver Paddy North. By the end of the night there was a clear dominance by Christchurch drivers, with Richie Taylor and Josh Boulton taking podium positions. Nelson driver Ian Burson slipped
into second place in his 3NZ super saloon and currently sits at the top of the leader board in points. The final round will be held this weekend at Woodford Glen Speedway.
